TOWNSChurch of the Panagia NEA FIGALIA At an altitude of 400 metres, Nea Figalia is built like an amphitheatre on hills clad in olive trees and cypresses. It is not a picture-postcard town but it does have magnificent views towards the Ionian Sea. It is also the last place between the sea and Ancient Phigaleia where you can pick up supplies. Luckily, there are plenty of shops, a bank, cafés, tavernas and a Sunday morning market. Also known as Zoursta, it has a proud history (it played a significant role in the 1821 War of Independence) and boasts a folklore museum on its eastern edge along with one of the most important Byzantine churches in the area.
