Greek churches dedicated to the Virgin Mary are called Panagia; the western Christian designation of "St. Mary" is rarely used in the Orthodox East, as Mary is considered the holiest of human beings and of higher status than the saints.
     The view from the church towards the distant graveyard highlights a significant difference between northern European churches and most Greek churches. In Greece, graveyards are usually located on the edge of town whereas churches, which often address social problems practically, locally and informally, are easily accessible in the centre of the community.
