HERACLES' WELL WALK
2 - 3 hours

  • Starting from The Ark, this walk follows the path behind the graveyardu north towards the top of the mountain where it intersects the stone fortifications that once surrounded the ancient city of Phigaleia.
  • Along the way, you will experience wonderful views, a plethora of wildlife and evidence of village activity including old and modern day goat houses.
  • Although much of the walk is along paths and open tracks, it is classified as energetic because you will have to scramble over rocks to cross the ancient wall and you might have to find a passage through dense vegetation.
  • The path north intersects an almost continuous stretch of the ancient wallv, and incorporates alternating round and square lookout towers and two "postern gates" ('side doors to the city'). At this point, you can make a detour back and forth along the wall to find the postern gates.
  • Otherwise, follow the pathw through a wooded area until you emerge into a small valley with an ancient spring and lots of olive trees.
  • Nearby (a short detour), is a well that is reputedly Heracles' well where he and Lepreos embarked on a series of competitions culminating in a duel, during which Lepreos lost his life.
  • To get to the well, traverse a series of terraces to the north until you reach a track. Follow this to the west as far as a stone goat house.
  • To return from the well, retrace your footsteps back to the stone buildings in the olive grove and look for the start of a path that runs along the ridge parallel to the eastern side of the ancient wall.
  • Due south from this point you will eventually come to a trackx which circles around the hill to arrive at the 'dog kennels'y on the road into the village.
