VILLAGESVastas CHAPEL OF SAINT THEODORA Every year thousands of pilgrims visit the Chapel of Saint Theodora, a few kilometres south of Vastas. It has seventeen trees growing out of its roof which, for religious people, is a miracle. For nature lovers it is a delight, made all the more intriguing by the absence of tree roots inside the chapel. With its nearby restaurant by a watermill on the banks of the Pamisos river, the site is commercialised but it is easy to see why and the tale of Saint Theodora, celebrated on 11 September, is compelling. She was a woman who dressed as a man in order to fight to save the village of Vastas from bandits.
