VILLAGES AVLONA Until 1922, one hundred years after the 1821 Greek War of Independence, Avlona was known as Karamoustafa after the Turkish Aga Kara-Mustafa. Perched on a hill on the southern side of the Neda river the village has a fantastic view of the river valley which is best appreciated from the overhanging outside seating area of the taverna. There is also a café in its paved central square which is also home to its hilltop church. Like many mountain villages, Avlona has a decreasing population but its school is still open and it is embracing tourists by publishing hiking trails.
