TOWNSChurch of Saint George KOPANAKI You will pass through the valley town of Kopanaki when travelling to Ancient Phigaleia via the Moreas motorway (E65) from Athens or Kalamata airports. Known for some of the first resistance against German soldiers in World War II, it is an important agricultural centre famous for its Sunday morning market. During the week the street traders disappear but trade continues from shops that seem to belong to another age. Do not be deceived by their façades which belie the goods on offer, often at competitive prices. If stocking up on supplies, be brave, cross the threshold and point to what you want or go to a supermarket.
