PLANT LIFE HORTA "Horta" ('wild greens') is a catch-all term for native plants eaten since ancient times including wild amaranth, dandelions, endives, nettles and spinach. It is important that you positively identify all wild greens before you eat them as there are many poisonous plants and look-a-likes. During the summer months, a walk through the countryside is filled with the scent of fragrant herbs such as sage, oregano, rosemary and thyme, the flowers of which are particularly important for bees who produce excellent tasting honey from them. You will also find chamomile and mountain tea.
