ROUTES TO THE ARK Directions FROM PATRAS VIA OLYMPIA If you are travelling from Patras to The Ark in Ancient Phigaleia, a detour to Olympia will not disappoint. In ancient times, this small town was a major religious sanctuary where the Olympic Games were held. Olympia lies in the wide valley of the Alpheios river, today around 18 kilometres from the Ionian Sea, but in antiquity perhaps half that distance. To the west of the town is a spectacular dam over the river. From here you can head south west to Andritsaina which is 25 kilometres from The Ark. It is a soothing drive on a newly improved road through a hilly landscape dotted with trees.
