VILLAGESThoknia CHURCH OF SAINT DIMITRIS Sadly most churches in Greece are locked but it is surprising who might have noticed your arrival and appear, seemingly from nowhere, and open the doors to reveal something even more surprising ... The interior of the restored Chapel of Saint Dimitris in Thoknia is covered in frescos dating from 1729 whilst the nave is separated from the sanctuary by a carved C19 iconostasis (wall of icons). The frescos are damaged, but it is possible to make out the narratives and to see that the faces of hierarchs were obliterated by the Turks because Islam discourages the depiction of humans.
