BYZANTINE CHURCH OF TAXIARCHES / ARCHANGELS CASTLE
On a hill to the north of Polichni you will find two adjacent treasures: the Byzantine Church of Taxiarches and the ruins of a castle. You will also experience fantastic views over the plain of Stenyclarus towards Mount Ithome.
Dating back to the tenth century, the church is a cross-in-square which has been added to and re-roofed many times. The church is locked but if you peer through the windows you can just make out murals dating back to the C18.
Linked to the Florentine family of bankers Acciauioli, the castle was occupied by the Greeks in 1418 and renamed after St Michael, leader of the archangels.
