The main entrance to the church in Petralona is flanked by two flags - a yellow flag depicting a double headed eagle, the emblem of the Orthodox Church, and the blue and white national flag of Greece. The presence of this flag outside all churches emphasises the close ties the church still has with the Greek state. Its status is largely based on the role it played as guardian of tradition and national identity during 400 years of Ottoman rule.
     You will also notice four column capitals leading to the door. These are Byzantine and came from the graveyard located to the east of the village.
