VILLAGESKato Melpeia CHURCH OF THE PANAGIA (VIRGIN MARY) The Church of the Panagia in Kato Melpeia dominates the main square. A mix of stone and rendered concrete with a central bell tower and an arched forecourt, it is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Hence, the church is called Panagia, the eastern Christian designation of "St Mary", the holiest of all human beings. Check out the fresco above the entrance which shows the Angel Gabriel visiting Mary to proclaim the birth of Christ. Or you can hang out in a funky café next to the church. Run by an artist, this has an attractive garden overlooking the Koube mountain spring.
