CATHEDRAL OF THE YPAPANTI (THE SAVIOUR)
The Cathedral of Ypapanti in the square beneath the C13 Frankish castle in Kalamata was built in 1860 in byzantine style (cruciform with a dome and large narthex) with two bell towers. Replacing an older church that was burnt in 1770, it suffered great damage during the 1986 earthquake but was restored.
According to legend, the cathedral's precious icon was found in the ruins of the original church after the Turkish Pasha who kept his horses there, dreamed a woman told him to dig in his stables. The Festival of the Ypapanti (27 January - 9 February) is of national importance and, locally, a holiday (2 February).
