VILLAGESIsoma Karyon CHURCH OF THE PANAGIA (VIRGIN MARY) The Church of the Panagia in Isoma Karyon is a large white building with red trimmings. It is protected by an imposing iron gate flanked by a pink-flowered bush and featuring three Greek crosses (with arms of equal length). On 1 March, mothers tie red and white 'Martis' bracelets onto the wrists of their children to stop the early spring sun burning their cheeks. These bracelets are worn until the Midnight Mass of a Greek Orthodox Easter. Then, when the traditional bonfires are lit, they are removed and thrown into the fire. This is said to be symbolic of Christ's resurrection conquering or "burning away" sin.
