VILLAGESIsaris CHURCH OF SAINT NICHOLAS The two tier bell tower of the Church of Saint Nicholas in Isaris protrudes proudly above the red roof tiles of buildings set into the green hillside of St. Elias. Close up, the church looks more vernacular with a simple entrance flanked by plant pots that belies its richly decorated interior. The church was rebuilt after the Battle of Isari in 1825 when the village was plundered by Turk-Albanians. The villagers barricaded themselves inside the church but the numerical superiority of the enemy overwhelmed them and they were eventually forced to flee. The next day the village was looted and burned.
