TOWNSCathedral of the Ypapanti KALAMATA Kalamata is a bustling port city. For many people, its lure is its beaches, with their blue waters and free sun beds. For foodies its the markets, cafés and tavernas, whilst culture vultures are attracted by its historic centre, byzantine churches, neoclassical architecture, museums and art galleries. The historical centre is dominated by a legendary C13 castle offering a bird's eye view of the city. At the foot of the castle is the "Palia Poli" ('Old City'). This was almost totally destroyed by the Turks during the War of Independence, rebuilt by the French in the 1830s, then levelled again by an earthquake in 1986.
