For the first time in 2019 May Day was celebrated at the Chapel of Saint Theodoros to the east of Ancient Phigaleia. The 1 May is International Labour Day and in Greece it is called 'Protomagia' (literally meaning the first day of May). It is an urban holiday and people traditionally go to the countryside for picnics and to gather wildflowers to mark the arrival of Spring.
     Approximately two hundred people crossed the bridge leading to the chapel, many carrying their leftover Easter food and lashings of wine and coca cola.
     Then, as at all Greek commemorations, the dancing started....
